MFL SPANISH
MFL
Muschampions will have the opportunity to learn a modern foreign language from year 3 up. Learning another language encourages pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world around them. Early exposure to different languages helps children to learn new languages when they are older, Muschampions in key stage one will be exposed to our modern foreign language. Our children will learn Spanish.
Aims
- To be able to express their ideas and thoughts in another language
- To understand and respond when spoken to in another language
- To begin to read and write in another language
- To link a new language to known languages
- To be curious about the differences in countries and cultures around the world.
At Muschamp, our Spanish curriculum aims to ensure every child becomes a confident and curious language learner, achieving our vision of going “To Excellence
and Beyond.” Spanish is taught as our modern foreign language because it is both widely spoken and accessible for primary learners.
Our intent is to provide an ambitious, inclusive curriculum that:
- Develops confident communication in listening, speaking, reading and writing
- Builds secure phonics, vocabulary and grammar knowledge
- Encourages pupils to express ideas, ask questions and take risks in another language
- Makes links between Spanish and the languages
children already know
- Broadens cultural understanding of Spanish- speaking countries
- Prepares pupils for successful transition to secondary MFL
We want pupils to develop independence, resilience and a lifelong interest in languages, understanding how learning another language expands their understanding of the world.
Implementation
Spanish is taught using the Primary Languages Network (PLN) Click2Teach/Video2Teach scheme of work. This ensures a high-quality, consistent and progressive curriculum supported by:
- Native-speaker audio
- High-quality PowerPoints, songs and stories
- Cultural links and authentic materials
- Built-in assessment tools
Curriculum structure
Pupils build their language knowledge systematically through the PLN Stages:
- Year 3 – Stage 1 (introducing core vocabulary, phonics and simple sentences)
- Year 4 – Stage 2 (expanding vocabulary, questions, short phrases)
- Year 5 – Stage 3 (increased grammar, reading and writing)
- Year 6 – Stage 4 (extended sentences, improved accuracy, cultural depth)
The curriculum is sequenced so previous knowledge is revisited, embedded and built upon each year.
Teaching and Learning Approach
Teaching prioritises active, engaging learning that develops pupils’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Strategies include:
- Songs, rhymes and stories to reinforce vocabulary
and phonics
- Practical speaking activities, role-play and drama
- Sentence-building and grammar tasks
- Native-speaker audio for accurate pronunciation
- Retrieval practice and repetition to secure long-term memory
- Video clips, games and authentic cultural content
- Opportunities for collaborative learning, creativity and problem solving Impact
The impact of our MFL curriculum is seen in pupils’ growing confidence, accuracy and enjoyment of language learning. By the end of KS2, pupils demonstrate a secure body of vocabulary, structures and phonics—what we refer to as the language “left in
the sieve”—giving them strong foundations for secondary learning.
Overall Impact
As a result of our curriculum:
- Pupils acquire secure, transferable language- learning skills
- They develop confidence, curiosity and positive attitudes towards languages
- They gain valuable cultural understanding and awareness
- They leave Muschamp secondary-ready, with the knowledge and skills to continue their language- learning journey successfully
Our curriculum ensures that every Muschampion is supported to become a motivated, capable language learner who continues their journey “To Excellence and
Beyond”.
