As a geographer our children will develop a sense of wonder and beauty about their world, their environment and their impact on its future.  Children will develop a sense of responsibility for the care of our world and a recognition of the part they play in its future.

Aims:

• Acquire knowledge about locations and places that will help them to set local, national and international events within a geographical context.
• Understand some of the important features of the Earth such as landforms, weather and climate, hydrological and ecological systems.
• Begin to develop an understanding of the significance of location and looking at the distribution patterns in human activities.  Location also involves how places are linked by movements of peoples.  Children experience these aspects and begin to understand the interdependence of people through investigation of their own and contrasting places.
• Understand some of the relationships between people and environments both how the environment affects people and how we affect the environment.
• Develop a sense of place, a feeling for the ‘personality’ of a place and what it might be like to live there.
• Develop an awareness, appreciation and sensitivity to ethnic, cultural and economic diversity.
• Acquire and develop skills necessary for geographical enquiry and be able to communicate them. 

Intent:

At Muschamp our intent is that the geography gives our children the foundations for a greater understanding of the world that we live in, allowing the children to consider their place in the world and promote the diversity around them. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human features and processes

Implementation:

Our carefully planned geography curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensure that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. Children are consistently given the opportunity to review prior learning and make meaningful links across the subject and other curriculum areas. Lesson are designed to develop the skills of a geographer by fully immersing them in all areas of the subject. The local area is fully utilised to achieve desired outcomes, with opportunities for learning outside the classroom. School trips and fieldwork are provided to give first-hand experiences, which enhance children's understanding of the world beyond their locality.

Impact:

Children will be engaged in geography lessons and be keen to share their learning with others, talking confidently about the skills and knowledge they have acquired, expressing well-balanced opinions, rooted in very good knowledge and understanding . Their work will show that a range of topics is being covered, cross-curricular links are made where possible, and a wide variety of skills are being taught.
